A husband and wife enjoying a weekend in the wild got a huge shock when they spotted a huntsman swallowing a possum in Tasmania.

Justine Latton and her husband were visiting Mount Field National Park when they came across the spider enjoying its meal.

Ms Latton uploaded photos taken by her husband to the Tasmanian Insects and Spiders Facebook page which show the huge huntsman dangling the possum in mid-air.

"Possum-eating spider! Taken by my husband at a Mt Field lodge," she captioned the pic.

The post has gone viral with more than 5900 shares, over 100 comments and almost one thousand likes.

"Whoa that’s one strong spidey!" wrote one commenter.

"Omg.. I can't even .. I wanna scream," wrote another.

"OMG what a once in a life time photo opportunity .... I would be so freaking excited if I were lucky enough to witness this ... not scary at all just interesting and such a mystery to how this all went down," added a third.

The unfortunate possum in question is called a pygmy possum and is very small compared to other species, however, the photographs are still a sight to behold. Eek!
