A 12-year-old girl is being hailed as a hero after she evacuated her four younger siblings from a raging house fire in Melbourne’s west last night.

The fire broke out inside the garage at around 7.40pm last night, Nine News reports.

Five children, including a young baby, were home alone inside the house when the blaze broke out, including the 12-year-old girl, who helped them all to safety.

“She’s done exactly the right thing,” said Keith Taylor from Country Fire Authority.

“She heard the working smoke alarm, went to investigate and after finding the fire, closed the door behind her then evacuated the rest of the family.”

The children’s mother arrived home minutes later and was treated on the scene for shock.

It took fire crews around an hour to get the fire under control. The cause is still unknown but Police say they are not treating it as suspicious.

Luckily, no one was injured, thanks to the quick-thinking young girl. Neighbours have rallied around the family, offering to donate clothing to help them out.
