A humble Target food processor has beaten out more expensive models in a tried and tested undertaken by CHOICE.

The consumer watchdog looked at a number of models including pricier machines from brands such as KitchenAid.

“The Target food processor performed consistently well and, in some cases better than, models from other leading brands we've tested,” said CHOICE home economist and tester, Fiona Mair.

The food processors were rated on standard tasks such as grating cheese, making pastry, slicing carrots and making breadcrumbs.

In the breadcrumb test, the $49 processor scored 100% compared with two KitchenAid models that only scored 80%.

On the slicing carrots task, it scored the same as food processors from Russell Hobbs and Kambrook, both of which are around double the price.

"This machine is a great size for a family," says Fiona. "It's compact, but still has a decent-sized bowl, and it doesn't come with many parts and accessories, so it's easy to store."

The Target food processor also gets the tick of approval on safety and ease of use, with a safety locking feature in the large chute that surprisingly is not included in many of the other food processors tested.

And the cons? Apparently the machine is quite noisy – even by normal food processor standards. It only comes with a few attachments and the pulse button needs to be held down to work.

All in all, however, it’s a pretty decent bargain.
