Are new mums wearing jewellery made from their umbilical cords?
Yes they are. In fact, it's a huge new thing in parenting circles right now.
We've all heard that it's possible to bank the blood from your umbilical cord and that many mothers have been using their placenta post-birth, to make smoothies full of essential nutrients. You can even grind your placenta down to make tablets to take following the birth.
But has anyone ever made their cord into jewellery? They have now.
And the results are pretty spectacular!
Jeweller Nianna Rodriguez from Speckled Milk (above) makes memory jewellery for her clients and told USA Today that it's a pretty straightforward process for her.
"It's amazing how you shave off the top layer and that's where you get this beautiful amber color that translates wonderfully into jewelry," she said.
She asks parents to pick a design and then just follow the packing instructions for sending the stump (when it falls off the baby) in the mail to her in America.
Nanna told Self that the stump of the umbilical cord, is a very personal reminder of the journey of pregnancy, a "personal keepsake to remember that season of life of having little kids and barely having the time to shower."
Fellow designer Ruth Avra (above) has been making beautiful pieces involving the umbilical cord since her son was born in 2012.
She can make a ring, bracelet, or cufflinks using the cord stump as her Instagram shows.
She also can make jewellery using your baby's hospital ID tag to make a bracelet.
USA Today reported that Avra's bestseller is the silver umbilical cord necklace, which sells for $195. People order them from all over the world.
