Pregnant woman shot to death - but her baby survives

A baby was delivered after his mum was shot dead by her husband.

And, the baby boy, Kai, is continuing to show show signs of progress, according to his maternal grandmother.

Joi Spencer was shot in the chest by her husband, Kamion Spencer who then called police and waited for them to arrive and arrest him. 

Sadly, little Kai suffered life-threatening heart issues during his birth, but doctors say he is continuing to thrive.

Joi's mother, Debra Curry, is coming to terms with the fact that she lost her daughter but gained a grandson on the same day.

"It’s like a transfer because, although I’m grieving for my daughter, just seeing her baby struggling to survive is giving me some kind of purpose," Debra told ABC Action News in Florida, USA.

Spencer is charged with manslaughter in Joi's death as detectives say he did not intend to kill her.

“She was a beautiful person," said Curry.

"A beautiful spirit.”

Debra told the TV station that she believed her daughter's marriage was a happy one and says the couple just returned home from a vacation in Jamaica.

She says that she is happy to step up and look after baby Kai as she struggles to grieve for her daughter.

“If that’s my purpose, to take care of baby, then that’s my purpose and I’m accepting it," said Curry.
