Having your cake and eating it too has just become harder for school children across New South Wales.
Some schools have made the decision to ban birthday cake in the classroom.
The Courier Mail reports Wamberal Public School is the last school to administer the ban, asking parents not to send them to school.
Central Coast Parents and Citizens spokeswoman Sharryn Brownlee told the publication: “The days of cakes in schools are finished.”
“Teachers see cakes as an unwanted classroom distraction but … at the younger school age, it shouldn’t be only about spelling and maths tests,” Ms Brownlee said. “Parents also send their children to school to learn how to share … and develop broader social skills.”
Similarly, parents are feeling the pressure to serve healthier food at children’s parties, swapping the tradition of cake for watermelon.
Nutritionist Tania Ferrareto told 7 News that banning junk food isn't the problem.
"We do also need to teach them how to have a little piece of cake and enjoy that and not be either worried about it or eat the whole things."
