As tributes pour in for a mother and her four children who tragically died on Monday night after an horrific crash, emergency services commended the hero truckie who tried to save them.

Charmaine Harris McLeod was driving with her four children in the car when she tried to overtake a truck, and instantly collided with another truck on the Bunya Highway in Queensland.

Both the car and truck burst into flames, however the truck driver managed to escape and attempted to pull Ms McLeod and her children from the wreckage.

Sadly, Ms McLeod and three of her children died on the scene. A fourth child was brought to hospital but died soon after.

Emergency services personnel commended the driver for his actions.

“The truck driver actually had burns to his arms and we believe that's from trying to help as well,” said Ambulance Service Assistant Commissioner Stephen Zsombok.
