The star opens up about her health, her marriage and the future

September 16 2018

Emma Watkins, the Yellow Wiggle, has opened up about the end of her marriage to Lachy Gillespie in a shock new interview.

The entertainer, who was filmed just days after her split with the Purple Wiggle was announced, admits the pair have stunned the other Wiggles by refusing to let the breakdown of their two-year-marriage alter their friendship.

'A lot of people have said to us that they just can't see how it can be so amicable,' Emma says on tonight's Australian Story "But truly, Lachy and I, we just get each other. Just because we're not romantically together anymore doesn't mean we're not together for the rest of our life.

'I feel really lucky to have him supporting me through the whole thing, which sounds bizarre, but this is our life and we are so connected.'

But she admits the split hasn't been easy, 'If we can get through this we can get through anything,' she says on the ABC show.

Emma and Lachy announced their split last month, shocking their fans. Secretly the couple had been living separate lives for six months and had sold their Sydney apartment.

'I think we decided to part ways quite organically over the course of about eight months," Emma reveals in the TV interview. 'It was a mutual decision.'

And part of the reason Emma chose to walk away from the marriage is because of her health - she is currently fighting a battle with endometriosis

Suffering painful periods and relentless pain, her doctors told her she needed an urgent operation in April and this rocked Emma to the core.

'I started to feel like the wheels were falling off,' she says. 'And I couldn't figure out if it was just my health or if it was my relationships.'

But she admits it was starting to become clear that she simply did not feel a romantic love for Lachy Wiggle saying, 'romantically, it just wasn't going the way that our friendship was going'.

But in the same interview, Lachy admits it hasn't all been as easy for him.

'There's not a lot of time in between to spend together outside Wiggles,' he told Australian Story a few weeks before news of their separation broke.

'It has all been all-consuming, and that's been a tricky thing to get right, I suppose.

'It's not easy spending that much time together with the pressure of work, too. I think it has gone through ups and downs.'
