A woman who allegedly left a three-month-old baby at home all alone for hours has been charged with child abandonment.

Police were called around 11.30am on Wednesday and found a baby girl inside a unit on Fisher Street, Cabramatta, in Sydney's west.

She was alone in her cot and when a 28-year-old woman returned to the apartment, she was arrested at 1pm.

The woman who was arrested was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with abandonment of a child under seven by detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.

Police will allege in court that the woman left the baby unattended for several hours.

The baby was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment and a notification for a child at risk was made.

Alternate care arrangements have been made for the baby girl.

The woman was refused bail and will now appear at Liverpool Local Court on Thursday.
